Transforming Your Smile with Veneers
Many of us suffer from smiles that are not as perfect as they could be.
Teeth, and consequently our smiles, can be affected by imperfections we were born with or have popped up as we have led our lives.
Imperfect teeth can be caused by:
- Poor colour (stain and discolouration)
- Different sizes
- Uneven lengths
- Minor misalignment
- Different shapes
At Main Beach Dental, we offer several solutions to aesthetically unpleasant teeth, and one of those options is the dental veneer.
Veneers are a relatively easy, quick, and effective way to improve the appearance of your teeth and smile.
So, if your smile is less attractive than you think it could be, schedule a consultation with Main Beach Dental to discuss your smile-improvement options, including dental veneers.
To help you decide if veneers might be the thing for your teeth, Main Beach Dental would like to share the following information with you!
How Dental Veneers Can Help Transform Your Smile
Veneers are “covers” for your teeth. Thin, contoured shells of composite material or porcelain are bonded to the surface of your teeth to protect the tooth beneath and improve its appearance.
Dental veneers can be made of composite or porcelain.
Porcelain veneers are custom fabricated by a skilled technician in a dental laboratory. They offer the highest levels of lustre and transparency, so they look great next to your natural teeth. They are also tough and durable.
The advantages of dental veneers:
Multiple functions – Veneers can address several cosmetic dental problems at one time.
Appearance– Porcelain veneers look and feel just like your natural teeth.
Quickness – they can be easily applied to give you a quick yet very effective solution.
Durability– with regular dental care, your veneers are very durable.
Stain-resistant–Porcelain veneers make your teeth stain-free.
As for cavities, tooth decay is possible in teeth with porcelain veneers.
The porcelain itself doesn’t decay, but any part of the tooth that isn’t covered by the veneer can still get a cavity.
This means that, in one way, veneers can be protective, but in another way, they can be troublesome.
It is usually easy to fix if you do get a cavity in a tooth with a veneer. There isn’t that much difference between a cavity in a natural tooth versus a cavity in a tooth with veneers.
It’s the same process. There is one slight difference if decay occurs directly against the porcelain – a special bonding technique is used to bond the composite filling material to the porcelain.
The meeting at the edge of the veneer is the area most susceptible to decay.
However, in practice, we come across very little decay around veneers, which seems to be because patients with veneers seem to take better care of their teeth once they’ve seen their new, beautiful smile.
If you suffer from tooth decay after the placement of a veneer, the decay is generally easy to treat.
On newer veneers, a tooth-coloured bonding agent may be the answer, while older dental veneers may be replaced. But as with all things dental, the real answer is in prevention and not cure.
While you may have some unavoidable issues with your teeth that veneers can fix, it then becomes up to you to avoid any future dental problems that might compromise your veneers or the teeth they are placed on.
Are you considering dental veneers?
If you have unattractive teeth, for primarily cosmetic reasons, dental veneers might be a great choice to restore your smile while simultaneously protecting your teeth against decay and spurring you on to improved oral hygiene.
