Dental Health Week: Busy Life Style? Keep A Healthy Smile!
It can be difficult to keep up good oral health habits in your busy, fast-paced life. We all have too many things to do, and too little time to do them. Sometimes this means that important routines such as dental hygiene can be rushed or ignored.
Which is why Main Beach Dental wants to remind you about the upcoming Dental Health Week, which takes place in the first full week of August. This is the Australian Dental Association’s major annual oral health promotion event and it has taken Oral Health For Busy Lives as its theme. Its aim is to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining good oral health in every aspect of their lives, no matter how busy their lives might be.
At Main Beach Dental, we work with you to balance your dental health and your busy life. After all, if you have poor dental hygiene, your schedule is eventually going to fill up with trips to get your dental damage fixed!
What are the Risks of Putting Off Dental Care?
Money and time, to put it simply. Dental care not done today will take more time and money tomorrow.
All manner of health issues have been linked to poor oral hygiene. When you don’t brush adequately and skip flossing, you increase risk of coronary heart disease. The bacteria in the mouth can find their way into the bloodstream causing damage to the heart’s vessels.
Other health issues related to poor oral hygiene include loose teeth, bleeding gums, diabetes, complications of pregnancy, and more.
Any time you think you save today by skipping oral hygiene is time you will pay back, and more, in time, money, and treatment in the future.
Portable Dental Hygiene?
Most of us think of dental care as an at-home practice, but it is actually an “all-day” practice if you do it properly!
How? By traveling with a portable dental hygiene kit and using it when you have time in your day.
The contents of the kit are simple:
Floss Picks. When you have a moment, pop out the floss picks and floss away.
Travel Size Toothpaste and Toothbrush. These are small, light, convenient, and can be used most anywhere.
Mouthwash. Mini-sized mouthwash bottles are perfect for a quick clean and rinse.
Water. Drinking water helps wash food particles away. It can help produce saliva flow, which is good for reducing plaque build up.
The Importance Of Nutrition
This is a time-neutral approach to dental health. After all, you already shop, cook, and eat your food, now we’re just asking you to make that food healthy!
Providing your body with the right amounts of vitamins and minerals helps your teeth and gums-as well as your immune system-stay strong and ward off infection, decay, and disease.
Harmful acids and bacteria in your mouth are left behind from eating foods high in sugar and carbohydrates. These include carbonated beverages, some kinds of fruit juices, and many kinds of starch foods like pasta and bread.
Eat foods rich in calcium and other kinds of minerals, as well as a healthy balance of the essential food groups like vegetables, fruits, dairy products, poultry and meat.
Basically, just eat well and you will live well, with more healthy and productive time to do what you need to do!
At-Home Care
This is relatively simple, and takes less than 5 minutes a day! Also, most of us already know what we should be doing:
- Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes each time.
- Floss all your teeth at least once a day, using about 45 cm of floss, and unwinding it as you go.
- Rinse your mouth with mouthwash after you brush and floss your teeth.
- Clean Your Tongue. Clean your tongue with floss, your toothbrush, or a commercial scraper.
